Brewer's yeast showed a 94 mL/day signal, not a proven milk boost
BLOOM randomized 105 mothers after birth before 34 weeks. Brewer's yeast was an adjusted 94 mL/day above placebo at day 7, but the 95% CI spanned -51 to +239; beta-glucan was -25 mL/day (95% CI -173 to +123). The trial is informative, but neither supplement has a proven milk-volume benefit.
The hot take
A higher point estimate is not the same thing as a demonstrated milk-volume benefit.
BLOOM is the first randomized trial to put objective milk-volume numbers behind brewer's yeast and beta-glucan after preterm birth. Brewer's yeast produced an encouraging point estimate, but neither supplement showed a statistically clear advantage over placebo. The useful conclusion is precision, not promotion: the trial narrows the range of plausible effects without establishing efficacy.
What BLOOM tested
Investigators at three Australian tertiary neonatal units enrolled 105 mothers aged 18 years or older within 72 hours of delivery before 34 weeks. Participants, families, clinicians, and researchers were blinded. Mothers were randomized to brewer's yeast 1,680 mg/day, beta-glucan 250 mg/day, or microcrystalline-cellulose placebo for 7 days. Twelve twin pregnancies meant that maternal outcomes involved 105 participants while infant-level outcomes involved 117 infants.
